Mortality Bites

The book we’ve been waiting for is almost here: I’ve spend three years traipsing my cancer laden ass and inquisitive mind around the U.S. meeting face to face with scores of young adult cancer patients from rural Alabama to New York City to suburban San Francisco. My cancer road trip is coming to an end and the all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-young-adult-cancer tome is headed to press. . . . almost!

Want a preview? Check out my site if you want to sink your teeth into blunt, brazen, and brash cancer stories. www.mortalitybites.com Let me know what you think!

Overdose on Passion

This has a lot to do with cancer. Hold tight. I’ll get to it: I’ve become a White Sox fan in a matter of a week. I live in Chicago and last week went to my first baseball game since I was a child rooting for the Pittsburgh Pirates in Three Rivers stadium with my grandpa. I’ve lived in Chicago for 5 years and never felt at home until I went to the Sox game last week. Is it the proximity to the plethora of polish meat products that makes me feel so at home, or just that Sox fans are nice, down to… Continue

Cancer, Sex, and the City

Two events compete for my attention this weekend: the annual American Society of Clinical Oncologists conference (ASCO) here in Chicago and the opening weekend of Sex and the City. While Sarah Jessica Parker and costume designer Patricia Field have not found the cure for cancer (nobody at the ASCO conference has yet to either) they cured my mind during my cancer surgery and treatment. At 27, I lived in a tiny studio apartment in which I kept a 15” TV and VCR stashed away on a closet shelf; alwa… Continue

Cancer Comfort Food

Every time I read about the gabillion pounds of greens and juice that other cancer patients are gulping down I feel like a guilty glutton. Well screw that! I already have cancer, why create a torturous relationship to food on top of that? So I’d like to start a big menu of all our favorite cancer comfort foods that might be utterly non-compliant with the world of natural healing but make us feel damn good anyway. When I am nervous, waiting for scans, or just numb with the news of my life I love… Continue

What Is Your Mind Sugar?

What is your mind sugar when you are waiting for test results or trying to mentally ward away the reality of your cancer steeped life? I OBSESS over parties and help friends plan weddings. Fixating on menus, ingredients, and flowers is my crack; my inner Martha and Ina flourish. I was waiting on scary test results (that came back yesterday as negative, yahoo!) The byproduct of my week of waiting: a cocktail party at my house on Friday, I’m making savory French pastries – the kind that seem impo… Continue

AND YOU? WHAT DO YOU DO?

I see your picture here all the time. I know you by your rants, your diseases, your relationships, your check-up news, and images of your friends and families. But what about your life outside of cancer? I’d love to hear what other peoples’ careers are (doesn't matter if you are working now or not!) and what you love - or hate about the field you work in. Me - Writer and Choreographer: I have been a choreographer for 15 years and direct a company in Chicago. The work I create is a hybrid of mo… Continue

Of course you'll be invited to my wedding. You ARE gonna be my bride. DUHHH ;) (haha I'm trying to bring "duh" back.) Anyway, yes, I'll most definitely send out an invitation to you one of these years. But you totally have to shove dollar bills down my pants. Oh yes, I will have THAT dance at my wedding. Nothing like free money and free groping to make you feel like your wedding is kick ass. ;) I'll write very soon, darling!

Holy shit, I've always wanted to go there! You need to let me know how it goes. Sounds like your husband and I would get along quite famously. :-) A mutual love for FDR can go a long way. Not only is FDR pretty much the best president ever, but he was also married to one hot bitch. It just doesn't get any better than that. Well... *thinks about Barack/Michelle* ...it could. ;-)

How are things going? Oh and does the museum at hyde park have all kinds of items that he's used? If so, look out for a pimp cane. You just KNOW he has one. If anything, for his mistress. Or a whip. Yeah, he was probably naughty, wasn't he? He didn't really have polio...I bet it was a freak sex act gone wrong.

Thanks Kairol. I responded to a post a week or so ago dealing with the difficulty of quitting nicotine even for those of us who've had cancer. I was surprised at how many responses there were.

*Hugs* *Support* *Prayers* *Thoughts* *Good Vibes* *Money* (sorry, that one I don't have) all headed your way. You're always giving it, so I guess it is true that it does come back your way! :) Hope July finds you well.

The doctor I met with was a GI specialist! My GP ordered the endoscopy. My oncologist tried 2 seperate times to get this ordered without success. I am pretty sure this doctor was the head honcho, big cheese doc that oversees the GI dept. Which is why he was a dick.

"Italian bulldog moms" The best! My mom is a retired nurse so she was in full nurse mode with me in the hospital. I was never awakened unless it was absolutely unavoidable, and I never went wanting. I don't know how people who do not have someone in their corner do it. I know I couldn't have.
